For as long as this $47 Long Tail Pro one-time-fee special is running, that will be my recommendation while it lasts.

I will update this post when this special ends.

_______

Below is my original post from early 2018…

Due to a recent pricing increase for Long Tail Pro, from a one time fee to a more expensive monthly/annual subscription model, several people in the community reached out to me asking if there are cheaper alternatives available.

This is not at all a reflection of the Long Tail Pro product.  They have done a great job converting Long Tail Pro to a completely online, cloud-based tool.

In addition, they also added full lifetime access to their Long Tail University training program and access to a Private Facebook group, specifically for Long Tail Pro annual plan customers.

So at $25/mo paid annually through my discount link, an annual subscription to Long Tail Pro Platinum is still a great value, especially when compared to the prices of several competing products below.

However, if that is a bit steep for you, read on because there is a cheaper alternative available.

Research Process Breakdown

I was fully expecting to have multiple, cheaper, options to choose from when I started my research.

Much to my surprise however, I was quite shocked at the price of competing products these days. Now I understand a little better why the folks at Long Tail Pro decided to do what they did.

Additionally, much of this was out of their hands, as Google changed the way different software providers access their data, making it more costly for them.

I searched for lots of related articles on the topic of keyword research tools and gathered many of the existing names I was already aware of and added any that were mentioned multiple times recently. The results are included at the bottom of this post.

Some offer a “free” version, or even display the word “free” prominently on their main page trying to say the product is completely free, but that was not the case for any of them.

You are either severely limited on what you can do in the free version, forcing you to upgrade, or you are limited by the results you will see making the free version pretty much useless.

And The Winner Is…

long-tail-pro-cheaper-alternatives-market-samurai-sm

The winner is Market Samurai.

It is similar feature wise to LTP and it is the only product listed that has a one-time only fee of just $97, through my link.

To get the $97 rate, sign-up for the free trial and you will receive a time-limited email for 35% off, which brings the price from $147 to $97.

I actually got started on my online journey many years back, with Market Samurai.  However, it has been a few years since I’ve used the product regularly, so I fired it up to make sure everything still worked as expected.

Everything did work and it was much faster than it was several years back, but there is one main caveat that should be mentioned.

As a result of the increased costs to pull relevant data from Google, the people at Market Samurai made the choice to switch to Bing for most of their keyword research data.

Since most of us use Google as our benchmark and strive to rank on Google, vs Bing, this is not ideal.

Unfortunately they had to either do that, or switch to a subscription based model like many of the other tools mentioned, so they decided to switch to Bing and remain the lowest cost option available.

The Keyword Research module can still help you find relevant keywords to target and the numbers are still very helpful when comparing different phrases against each other.

Additionally, the Competition Analysis module does pull the top 10 results for the phrases you are targeting from Google.

However, the specific keyword numbers such as search volume and CPC values does come from Bing.  I wanted to make sure you are aware of that, as I do not see that mentioned very often elsewhere.

Below you will see a full pricing breakdown of all the products that I researched.

It is very clear to see that the industry has definitely shifted to a monthly/yearly subscription model and it really makes sense, given that it is costing them more to pull the relevant data from Google.

If you are looking specifically for the lowest cost option, Market Samurai wins.

However, that data won’t be as accurate as Long Tail Pro, since

Keyword Research Tool Prices Compared

SEMrush – $69-549/mo ; $99-5,499 per year

KeywordTool.io – $48-88/mo ; $460-845 per year

Buzzsumo – $99/month or $948/yr

Long Tail Pro – $25/mo or $297/yr; $47 One-Time-Fee Special (*2019 Update*)

KWFinder – $29-49/mo ; $149-290 per year

Moz KW Difficulty Tool – $99-599/mo; $328-1,438 per year

Keyword Canine – $47/mo; $297/yr

Market Samurai – Full price $147, $97 through my link.  This is a one-time only fee that includes lifetime access, support and upgrades.

To get Market Samurai for only $97, sign-up for the 12 day free trial through my link and you will get a time-limited offer via email to upgrade to the full version for just $97.

The special pricing will be available for 6 days after you sign-up for the free trial, so be sure to take advantage of the discount during that time.

  1. Thanks for the breakdown of long tail keyword research tools. I know I saw that one of the well known research tools was a one time payment but could not remember which one it was. I had tried hittail and long tail pro and heard it was a one-time payment on a content marketing podcast. I thought I was losing my mind since they were both monthly subscriptions now. Glad to finally know that LTP was one-time and have changed. I will have to try marketsamurai now. I tried SEMrush which was okay after the feature shock of thr trial pro version. Talk about information overload.

    • Hi Jon,

Thanks for reaching out! As a result of your comment I updated the post and the “And the winner is…” section to include the details on how to get the $97 rate. It was listed further down, but it makes good sense to put the details there as well.

To get the $97 rate, sign-up for the free trial through my link above and shortly thereafter, you will receive a time limited email to get the $97 rate vs full price of $149.

      Hope that helps!

  2. Yeah, I started giving Market Samurai the ol’ college try back in 2014 when I got “Don Corleoned” lol (as I like to put it – got an offer I couldn’t refuse) and a one-time free and clear amount of about $97 …It is an excellent tool just like you say it is! Though I have been wanting to give Long Tail Pro a try just to do a little feature comparison.

  3. Hi,

From what you said the Market Samurai is the way to go. Although i found this site that claims that you get Long tail Pro for 47$ One time fee special offer. I am not in any way affiliate to them and this is not spam. But i will like to know if anyone bought this? Whats the catch? Is it real? If this is real i will buy it. If not i will go for Market Samurai.

    • Hey Peter,

As I mentioned in my direct email response to you, that is in fact a legitimate deal and a great one! I modified the post above with a June 23rd update in yellow towards the top, with links to this special limited-time deal.

I contacted the folks at Long Tail Pro and their affiliate manager Heather confirmed that this $47 one-time fee is in effect right now and it will last at least through the end of July 2018 for followers of my site. Beyond that, there are no guarantees.

It is a great deal, you get full access to Long Tail Pro and all the features for up to 20,000 search results that do not expire. In addition, you get their bonus Long Tail Pro Bootcamp SEO video training program.

Grabbing this $47, one-time fee for Long Tail Pro is my new recommendation for as long as this deal lasts. If you have any other questions, let me know.

The direct link to this special offer is here below. Thanks for the comment and the heads up!
